WK 15 – ART PROJECT – “FINGER”PAINT

I recently moved houses, and I lost the paint & paper sheets in the process.  Due to fast thinking and a friends house, I decided to construct this week’s project using sheet and markers.  I started this piece off abstract and created triangular shaped figures, and then drew more and more in a cyclical fashion.  I ended it with the piece resembling a beach volleyball, and that would be its appropriate title.  I like thinking abstractly because it allows me to create things without much focus, with a very different end goal than I would have ever imagined.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Katarina Stiller is an artist attending CSULB, and takes pride in creating sculptures.  Though I was not able to interview her directly, upon finding out more about her portfolio, I was able to get an idea of the works she likes to do.  She has an interest in clay work, and really enjoys ceramics.

FORMAL ANALYSIS:

The skull was crafted by re cycled clay, and had been created by hand.  The ceramic showed fine detail in the piece and there was obviously effort done in the production.  There was also use of paint which added more effect to the skull.

CONTENT ANALYSIS:

The skulls to me caught my attention immediately due to its nature.  This particular piece caught my attention because it stood out from the rest of the other figures on display.  This one seemed to have more thought and effort done on it, in the sense that it was a hard piece to make.  Upon looking at other works, Kat appears to really enjoy making sculptures of skulls of different types.  Whether they be animal skulls, human skulls, or different assorted arrangements to create skulls, they all share the same passion.

EXPERIENCE:

I enjoyed this week’s gallery, it was a little different where everything was on sale, and I was not able to directly speak to the artist but I enjoyed being able to view different works.  Kat’s display of handcrafted skulls caught my attention immediately and I was able to enjoy her work.

For this week’s assignment, I decided to take a selfie with my friends, Jason Tong & Terrence Chung. I decided to take a picture with them because I haven’t hungout with them in a long time.  We decided to play video games, and the feeling was nostalgic so as a result, I decided to snap a quick photo.  I miss playing video games with my friends, but have been very busy lately.

WK 14 – CLASSMATE DISCUSSION -EMILY TOMASELLO

For this week’s classmate discussion, I talked to Emily about the following question, “What will the student experience be in 2036?” and I first responded by saying that the majority of classes will be held online, and face to face will become more optional instead of mandatory.  I also added that handwritten work will become more and more scarce, as online documents will take over as it already is currently.  Emily responded similarly and said that school will be done more from home.  Emily and I also agreed that school campuses will still remain intact and there will still have a student body attending regularly.  I was not able to snap a picture, but Emily did snap a picture of us on her blog.

WK 13 CLASSMATE DISCUSSION – TIMOTHY CHUNG

For this week, I talked to fellow classmate Timothy about the following question, “Would you rather take the blue or red pill from the Matrix?” Blue pill being where the story ends, and you wake up believing everything you want to believe in, and red pill is where you get to learn more about what really goes on.  I answered that I would rather take the red pill, because I would rather learn about the cruel truth of the world, rather than be sheltered and naive.  Timothy answered the same, where he said the blue pill would keep you from not knowing what goes on in the real world.  In today’s global stance, it is important to keep up with what happens in the world.  (I forgot to take a picture with Timothy due to Carla starting her presentation.)

WK 12 – Artist Discussion – Sage Garver

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Sage is an undergraduate student here at CSULB finishing up her last semester majoring in Fine Arts.  She was always appreciative of art ever since she was young, but started refining her skills the more she grew up.  She began to grow more fond of sculpture since.

FORMAL ANALYSIS:

The sculpture consists of various shapes among the wall, it’s 3-D imprinted figure planted among the wall.  It’s white in color and has many circles and bumps across the room.   In the middle of the room was a gold chain to contrast the white background.

CONTENT ANALYSIS:

This room gave off an environment of clean and tidy.  The white bumps are supposed to represent the cells on your body and how bacteria can infect your body and take over.  The message that one should take care of your body more.  Sage dealt with many diseases and felt connected to this exhibit.

SYNTHESIS:

This was an interesting exhibit for me because it contained a scientific aspect.  The term “BIO” became more existent as I discovered the meaning behind the bumps on the wall.  The fact that she took the time to make each and little bump unique added to the feeling of the piece.  The environment was neat and clean as opposed to last week’s evil environment.img_2178.jpg

WK 11 – Artist Discussion – Kyle Kruse

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Kyle is an undergrad here at CSULB, finishing up his last semester for his BFA in Print Making.  He’s considering pursuing a MFA in Visual Anthropology, and plans to move to NYC or outside the states aftewards.  He’s very inspired by Greek Mythology culture, and it shows through his pieces and exhibits.  His

FORMAL ANALYSIS:

The aura of the exhibit set off a darker vibe, where the room was black and had few lighting.  The pieces were made of wood, sculptures, and paint.  The jagged and fixed nature of the three heads lit up the room.   The canvas and pieces were smooth and the atmosphere of the room matched.

CONTENT ANALYSIS:

Each head resembled a greek mythology relation, with the story of Prometheus, Janus, and Sisyphus.  The stories told what they had done for humanity, and the piece shows the skull of their actions.  Kyle mentions the void, which is the time that we live in today.  According to Greek Mythology, the void became about due to these three.  Kyle aimed to give the feeling of the punishment the three received through his works, and allowed everyone to see it.

SYNTHESIS:

I have always been fascinated with Greek Mythology myself, so this exhibit was fun for me to see.  I have previously known the story of Prometheus, who was punished for giving fire to mankind, so I really focused on his head the most.  This experience was fun for me and I enjoyed this weeks work.
